Whether you're a self-published author or one who is published by a large house, there's one thing for certain. You need an editor who will help your writing be the best it can be. So often, especially with self-published books, the writing could be vastly improved. In fact, the writing is horrible, alarming, just plain bad. They authors didn't bother to self-edit and they didn't hire an editor (with the reasoning that they just don't have the money to hire one). That is a huge mistake. An editor's role is to take what we writers write and make it sing! There are far too many poorly written books out there to count, especially with the advent of e-books. That's when the rule comes into play about "just because you can publish doesn't mean you should publish." We want to add something... Do not publish until you've had an editor help you with your work. Even the best writers require an editor's assistance! We are not saying that you shouldn't write if your talents aren't in that arena. We say everyone has a story and should write it down. But if it's going into the public domain for consumption by the masses, hire a professional editor. Otherwise, you might end up with a very special award for poorly crafted wording.
